Interstate repatriation of deceased

Through the InvoCare network of funeral homes, we will smoothly arrange repatriation between the States and Territories of Australia.

What happens if my loved one dies in another state?

Australian law requires that the death is recorded in the state where the death occurred. Repatriation can be arranged by air or road travel and your funeral director will advise which is the most suitable and the costs involved.

How do I arrange an interstate repatriation?

To transport a deceased person to another state, you should first choose a reliable funeral director in the state you are returning your loved one to. The funeral director will register the death and prepare the paperwork and details regarding the repatriation.

What information do I need to provide for an interstate repatriation?

The funeral director will work with the family and key providers to collect all information required to repatriate interstate.  This includes (but may not be limited to):

  • The full name of the deceased
  • Where they are located
  • Full name, contact details and relationship of next of kin or person responsible for arranging the repatriation
  • Travel Insurer’s name, policy number and contact details (if applicable)
  • Whether Cremation or Burial is planned on arrival home along with the name and address of this location
  • Name, address, telephone and email address of receiving funeral home
  • Whether any family members are planning to fly on the same flight as their loved one, and if so, we will connect the appropriate flight numbers

How long does an interstate repatriation take?

Like with overseas repatriation, it usually takes 7-10 days but it depends on the circumstances surrounding the death. If all goes according to plan, repatriation can occur in just days.

Are there any special considerations with air travel?

A mandatory requirement with any air travel, including domestic, is that the deceased must be embalmed. This process removes the need to keep them in a cooled environment and aids in preserving the condition of the deceased.. In addition to this, it also ensures the safety of the staff that handle the coffin during the various stages of the journey home.

How much will an interstate repatriation cost?

This is a difficult to answer as it depends on the number of variables involved in the repatriation. However, for repatriation interstate the cost can be as little as a few hundred dollars depending on the distance travelled within Australia.
